Blueberry smoothie

Morning guys..

I hope you are all well & have had a lovely weekend.

This new breakfast recipe idea is so simple & refreshing on a morning time, or any time for that matter. Blueberries are known for their antioxidant properties and are high in vitamin E. I want to explain to you a bit more about the term ‘antioxidants’ & what they actually do.

I feel like the term ‘antioxidant’ is thrown around so much that we as a population aren’t exactly sure how they are meant to work.. we just know its good when they do. The hypothesis is that antioxidants prevent/slow down disease and oxidative damage. They are meant to do this by reducing something called ‘free radicals’.  Free radicals biochemically contain one or more unpaired electron. So why is is not good to have a something that does not have a full electron pairing system?? They basically want to steal there electrons from elsewhere within the body.

This can then interfere with cellular processes. Oxidation of DNA bases can cause mutations and therefore diseases such as cancer. Protein oxidation can cause interference with brain neutrons and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and lipid (fat) oxidation can lead to atherosclerosis (thickening/hardening of the artery walls).

These oxidative free radicals can come from internal biochemical processes or from the outside environment such as smoking, air pollution, or the diet. It is hypothesised that antioxidants such as vitamin E and vitamin C prevent these free radials from damaging cell structure by giving them there much wanted electron pairing and therefore reducing the cause of disease processes. Numerous studies show that various compounds within fruits and vegetables can help hinder the disease process.

So in order to gain all that antioxidant power, heres my newest recipe for you all..

You will need..

  • Handful frozen blueberries
  • few ice cubes
  • one banana
  • One cup almond milk

Simply mix everything in your blender, serve & you are good to go.
